The Early Quartos Concordance
Every word in the 21 plays, spelled as printed. Choose a word to see every line it is in.
Key
- Words are spelled exactly as printed. "loue" and "love" are different entries. Tick the box above to find them together.
- The search finds the exact word typed. "hee" does not find "hee'le" or "hee's", and "loue" does not find "loue-daie": each is an entry of its own. Type the full form, or choose "Begins with" or "Contains" to widen the search.
- Line numbers are those of the play tables. t1, t2… are title-page and title lines, which the tables do not number.
- The line number carries the table's colour: yellow = the two witnesses differ on this line; turquoise = text from ISE only; grey = a printer's habit (VV for W). These lines are not yet checked against the scans.
- Prefix = a speech prefix (such as "Rom." or "Ham."). These were found automatically and are hidden unless you ask for them. They are not in the word counts. Only a prefix at the start of a line is recognised; a prefix in the middle of a line is counted as an ordinary word.
- Joined = a word broken with a hyphen at the end of a printed line; it is listed at the first line.
- ISE reading = a word found only in the ISE reading of a yellow line, not in our text. Hidden unless you ask. Not in the word counts.
- Hamlet Q1 is the confirmed Huntington text. The Contention (1594) and The Famous Victories have one witness only (ISE), so every line of them is unchecked.
